Wet Scrubbing Technologies: A Tailored Approach to Cleaner Operations

Limestone-Gypsum Process:

This is one of the most widely used FGD technologies. In this process, flue gas is passed through a slurry of limestone or lime to react with and remove SO2. The resultant byproduct is gypsum, which can be recovered and used in various applications.

Caustic Process:

This variation of wet scrubbing capable of ultra-high scrubbing efficiencies of ≥ 99% in a packed-bed scrubber uses a solution of NaOH (caustic) to react with SO2 forming sodium sulphite (Na2SO3) or sodium bisulphite (NaHSO3) which can then be further oxidized to form sodium sulphate (Na2SO4).

Ammonia-Based Process:

This process uses ammonia or ammonia derivatives to react with sulphur dioxide, forming ammonium sulfate or bisulfite. This byproduct can be recovered and sold to the fertiliser market.

Dual Alkali Process:

This innovative approach combines the use of two alkali compounds, one sodium-based and the other calcium-based, to capture and remove SO2. The sodium compound reacts with SO2 to form sodium sulphite or bisulphite which is subsequently reacted with the calcium-based alkali, recovering the more expensive sodium reagent for recycle and re-use in the scrubber.

Semi-Dry Scrubbing: Efficiency with Spray Dryer Absorber (SDA)

Spray Dryer Absorber:

In SDA, flue gas is passed through a spray dryer, where a slurry of sorbent is atomised. The sulphur dioxide is absorbed into the droplets and reacts with the droplet, subsequently evaporating to produce a dry byproduct that can be separated from the gas stream in a downstream baghouse filter.

Dry Scrubbing Technologies: Economical and Environmentally Sound Solutions

Dry Sorbent Injection (DSI):

In DSI, a dry sorbent, such as hydrated lime or sodium bicarbonate, is injected into the flue gas to react with sulphur dioxide. This method is particularly useful and economical when water availability is limited or when the SO2 scrubbing efficiency requirement is less demanding.
